For a long time, superstar rapper Drake kept his child Adonis a secret and didn’t share a single photograph of him with the world. Until now, that is. At the end of March 2020 the star posted some pictures of his young son on social media, and people were quite surprised at the looks of the little boy.
The story of Drake and Adonis is quite a complicated one. The existence of the little boy first came to mainstream attention when Drake’s fellow rapper and rival Pusha T released a diss track in 2018. In the song – called “The Song of Adidon” – Pusha T revealed the child’s name and slammed Drake for allegedly “hiding” him.
Among the lyrics there were the words, “You are hiding a child, let that boy come home. Deadbeat mother****er playin’ border patrol…” Pusha T also revealed who the baby’s mom was with the lyrics, “Sophie knows better as your baby mother,” and, “Love that baby, respect that girl. Forget she’s a pornstar, let her be your world.” For reference, the “Sophie” was revealed to be a one-time adult movie star called Sophie Brussaux.
Resurfaced articles indicate that Drake didn’t believe Adonis was actually his child at first, and they also suggested that he’d asked the pregnant Brussaux to have an abortion. In May 2017 the celebrity gossip website TMZ published the content of supposed text messages which Brussaux claimed were between her and Drake, and they didn’t paint a pretty picture of their relationship.
In the alleged text messages between Drake and Brussaux, the former asked her to have an abortion and she responded, “I can’t kill my baby simply to indulge you, sorry.” Things got heated fast, and in his last message Drake wrote to her, “You do know what you’re doing – you think you’re going to get money.”
TMZ asked a Drake representative for comment, and they said that in addition to doubting the text messages, “This woman has a very questionable background. She has admitted to having multiple relationships. We understand she may have problems getting into the United States. She’s one of many women claiming [that] he got them pregnant.”
The same day, a “source close to the rapper” told the website HollywoodLife, “Drake’s not denying he slept with her. It was a one-time thing in Amsterdam and he used protection and he knows it’s not his child.” And Drake’s representative added, “If it is in fact Drake’s [kid] – which he completely doesn’t believe – he would do the right thing by the child and support it financially.”
Brussaux, meanwhile, posted updates on her Instagram account about how the pregnancy was progressing. In August 2017 she published a picture of herself standing beside congratulatory baby decorations with the words, “Thank you to my amazing parents and friends for throwing me the best shower one can ever hope for! Words can’t express the depth of my gratitude – for the shower but also your love and support.”
And then on November 1 Brussaux posted a picture of herself and her new baby to Instagram – though the child’s face was not visible. For the caption she wrote in French, “Maman très heureuse d’un merveilleux petit garço,” which roughly translates to, “I am the very happy mother of a wonderful little boy.”
Many people dropped by Brussaux’s Instagram account to comment on the photograph. One person said, “Be happy girl and congrats on being a mother. Many prayers to you with dealing with paparazzi and whatnot.” Meanwhile, plenty of others tagged Drake in their comments and warned him not to be a “deadbeat dad.”
But of course, Drake did accept that Adonis was his biological son. In an October 2018 interview on the HBO show The Shop, the rapper said, “I am a single father learning to communicate with a woman who, you know, we’ve had our moments. I do want to be able to explain to my son what happened.”
Furthermore, Drake called his child “a beautiful boy” with “crazy blue eyes.” He explained, “… I don’t have any desire for him to like, not love his mother, or I don’t ever want the world to be angry at his mother. We have found ourselves in a situation, and we are both equally responsible. I want him to love his mother, and I have to project that energy.”
The rapper also spoke about how he’d told his mother about the situation. Drake said, “I think I was more scared to tell my mom, because [she] has had real relationships with women in my life over the course of my years that I’m sure she would expect or be elated if I were to have gotten one of those women pregnant.”
Drake also mentioned his ex and child on the track “March 14” for his 2019 album Scorpion. He rapped of Brussaux, “She not my lover like Billie Jean – but the kid is mine. ’Single father:’ I hate when I hear it. I used to challenge my parents on every album. Now I’m embarrassed to tell them I ended up as a co-parent.”
Drake also talked about where he and Brussaux were in their relationship. Speaking as if to his son, he rapped, “Hopefully by the time you hear this, you and your mother will have come around – instead of always cutting each other down. God willing, I got a good feeling; you got a good spirit. We’ll talk more when you hear this.”
The rapper also made a curious comment in another track on the Scorpion album. In the song “Emotionless,” he said, “I wasn’t hiding my kid from the world, I was hiding the world from my kid.” And considering what a high-profile rapper Drake is and the fact that his child had made headlines before even being born, that might have actually been a good move.
Adonis began popping up on Drake’s Instagram account – just not in person. Instead, Drake shared snapshots of the life they were embarking on as father and son. In October 2019 he posted a picture of Adonis’ birthday decorations and captioned it, “Happy birthday king.” Another time he showed off a painting that the little boy had done.
In December 2019 Drake gave an in-depth interview to the podcast Rap Radar, and there, he spoke about his son. The star said, “To be honest with you, I did a DNA test for my son and it came back to us and it said the DNA test got ruined in transit and they couldn’t be 100 percent sure that that was my son or not. So, I was in a really weird pending situation where I didn’t want to go tell the world that that was my son and it wasn’t.”
Drake explained that because his child looked different from him, he wasn’t sure whether he was the father. The rapper said, “If you see my son [you’ll] understand why. He’s a stunning child you know, with the brightest blue eyes and at the time I was like, ‘I don’t know.’ It actually wasn’t until a week before the album came out that I got confirmation that [he] was definitely my son. It took me two more solid [DNA] tests with two different companies.”
In the same interview, Drake declared that he had essentially lost the battle between him and Pusha T. The rapper said, “It was just, you know, he told the world that the biggest artist at the time has a kid that he hasn’t told you about. I knew kind of, for me, it was over at that point. It wasn’t even about battle rap.”
The rapper also said that his life had been going well since becoming a father. He explained on the podcast, “I’m at a great place in my life. My life is about peace, my life is about drinking espressos and wine. I’m trying to make this album, I’m enjoying being a father, I’m enjoying my house. My mind isn’t plagued by beef.”
As for Brussaux, she also seems to be enjoying life as a parent. In fact, she’s balancing motherhood with a pretty illustrious career. Though she was indeed once an adult film star going under the name “Rosee Divine,” she’s now an accomplished artist who has won plenty of acclaim for her painting work.
Brussaux has even painted the Pope, and she met him personally at the Vatican to deliver his portrait. The artist wrote on Instagram at the time, “Such an honor to meet Pope Francis and gift him the portrait I painted for him… I used green – the color of hope – with red – the color designated by [the United Nations Development Programme] to fight poverty.”
Brussaux is also the founder and artistic director of an extremely successful non-profit: Arts Help. It currently has an incredible 2.5 million members and is the biggest art publisher in the world. Such has been its impact that in May 2019 Brussaux and her team received an award from UN-Habitat – an offshoot of the United Nations.
So all in all, both Adonis’ parents are very accomplished people. Not only does she reportedly speak several languages, Brussaux also has degrees in wealth management and international affairs in addition to her artistic and nonprofit work. And Drake is of course a best-selling rapper with four Grammys and 27 Billboard Music Awards to his name.
On March 30, 2020, Drake posted pictures of his little son on Instagram for the first time. As a caption, he wrote, “Laughter is your best medicine, but tears can also be a powerful release. Let go of any judgment you may have around that. Remember that you are never alone, and if you need to be reminded of that ask for support and it will show up.”
Drake went on, “It’s impossible to always control your surroundings, but when you shift the focus to how you want to feel, everything will conspire to assist you. I love and miss my beautiful family and friends and I can’t wait for the joyful day when we are all able to reunite. Until then please keep your lights on.”
Adonis had gorgeous blond curls, and people who saw Drake’s Instagram post were overwhelmed by how cute he was. One person wrote, “God bless you bro! What an adorable little boy, you have a beautiful family.” Another said, “He is the cutest little thing ever.” For her part, Brussaux also dropped in to post some heart emojis.
Brussaux decided to post some pictures of Adonis to her Instagram account as well. For the caption, she wrote, “Thanking God every day for blessing me with such a beautiful family and amazing friends. I wish that much on everyone; keep safe and positive…”
One of the photographs Brussaux posted in the Instagram gallery was cheekily Photoshopped so that Drake and the former had bright golden hair like their son. She wrote, alongside a gasping and a laughing emoji, “PS: all this time you thought [Drake] was dark-haired… but Adonis’ parents are really blonde.”
Unfortunately, not everyone took the reveal of a celebrity child in the spirit that they should have done. The original post on Drake’s Instagram racked up 6.3 million likes. But on Twitter people posted jibes and bad-taste memes about how little blonde Adonis didn’t look very much like his father or even his mother.
Student newspaper The Daily Targum commented on the young boy, saying, “Adonis has fair skin, bright blue eyes and blonde curly hair. He clearly doesn’t look much like his dad just yet.” The publication added, “At the end of the day, the internet proved Drake’s point as many made fun of an innocent [toddler]. Maybe he was right to hide the world from his kid after all.”
The paper also added, “This isn’t the first time [that] people have been cruel to celebrities’ children online. Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s [young] daughter Blue Ivy Carter is constantly on the receiving end of criticism from grown adults on the internet. Every time a new picture of Blue Ivy is released, internet users are quick to judge her features – comparing her to her parents and making memes out of her.”
And the article concluded, “People fail to realize that just because these kids have famous parents, it does not mean they are invincible. They are just kids. Imagine if you had a two-year-old son or an eight-year-old daughter and all of your Facebook friends were bullying them online. It is hard enough to grow up in the spotlight, and facing constant undeserved criticism makes it even worse. Let’s all remember to be kind.”
But although Adonis doesn’t look like his father or mother, he does look like his grandmother Sandi Graham. And Drake’s fellow rapper 50 Cent thought so, too. He posted on social media a picture of Sandi and Adonis side-by-side and wrote, “Drake had his mom a grand baby for real, her genes are strong. I bet she is so happy he looks like her.”
Drake’s always been very close to his mom. Back in 2013 the rapper told the Huffington Post that he had given her his Best Rap Album Grammy and said, “My mother is an incredible woman. I talk about her a lot on this album [Nothing Was the Same]. She’s brought me to this point single-handedly… She’s the most important person in my life.”
Graham – who worked as a teacher in her younger years – actually raised Drake as a single mother. She and Drake’s father Dennis Graham split up when Drake was only five, and she took on the responsibility of being a single parent. The mom supported her son throughout his career and has talked about how proud she is of him.
Various Twitter users explained how little Adonis ended up looking like his grandmother – giving anyone who was reading a biology lesson. One person wrote, “People need to take this time and go back to basic Bio I. The white genes are dominant genes here. The 50 percent black in Drake became 25 percent in Adonis, because his mom is white. He pulled a lot from Drake’s side, specifically his mom – which is why he has blond curly hair and pretty blue eyes.”
Another person used another well-known biracial family to highlight how genes worked. They said, “Baby is precious. Recessive genes are not a pair of pants you put on. They’re called recessive for a reason. Meghan Markle’s genes are not as prevalent in her son and the red hair of Archie is a recessive gene that came from [Prince] Harry.”
Even though Adonis looks more like his grandmother than either of his parents, it’s clear that that has no impact whatsoever on the amount of love his mom and dad feel for him. Adonis may yet grow up outside of the spotlight but if he chooses to follow in his father’s footsteps, lots of people would probably love to see him as an adult.
